Wise words indeed, people can only fly by riding air vessels like airplanes or helicopters. Many people dream of flying solo, without machines keeping them afloat, just you and the freedom to circle the sky over and over again.

Flying on your own is a distant dream, thanks to hundreds of airlines all over the world, people are able to travel through the sky. Now, let’s talk about Garuda Indonesia, a 5-star airline.

Origins and Ownership

Garuda Indonesia started out as a subsidiary of KNILM (Koninklijke Nederlandsch-Indische Luchtvaart Maatschappij, in english Royal Dutch Indies Airways). The initial name of the airline was KLM Interinsulair Bedrijf when it was founded on August 1, 1947.

The current CEO of Garuda is Muhammad Arif Wibowo, who took the position on December 12th, 2014. Wibowo was born on June 26th, 1968 in Madiun, Indonesia. Wibowo has a bachelor degree in mechanical engineering and a master’s degree in management of air transportation.

Garuda is derived from a dutch poem by Noto Soeroto, “I’m Garuda, Vishnu’s bird, that spreads its wings high above the islands”.

Ranked as a 5-star airline by SkyTrax, Garuda received positive online reviews from customers. Most reviews acknowledge the welcoming and caring flight attendant staff, almost every review gave the airlines’ cabin staff service a 5 star rating. Another 5 star feature of Garuda, is their comfortable seats.

TThe information distribution of Garuda is efficient according reviews, for example, attendants on the ground floor inform passengers about changes in their flights immediately. They also disseminate information regarding the weather conditions for each destination. The baggage assist crew was also mentioned in a couple of reviews, upon checking-in, the assist crew handled heavy baggage and other belongings for the convenience of each passenger. There were complaints about delayed flights, but passengers were overwhelmed by Garuda’s service however, they still recommend the airline to their family and friends despite the delays.

The Website

Garuda’s website is well designed and is easily navigatable. The homepage is lean and forward, customers can book flights, check flight status, manage hotel arrangements and browse daily flight schedules. Their interface has a page for discounted prices and promos.

The website displays a gallery of pictures about recent news, awards and upgrades to their fleet and facilities.

Nothing new actually, but Garuda amplifies the idea of “less is more,” with their simple interface design.


Customer Service

Garuda contact center is open 24/7, for phone assistance. A FAQ page is also available for quick access to answers and information, and they also operate Email customer service. The FAQ page is more than enough for general questions and even specific ones.


Garuda allows passengers to choose from 3 options, First Class, Business Class or Economy class.

First Class

A limousine service is provided to first class passengers to reach the airport in comfort and style. The interior cabin features slide-in rooms for privacy. An 82” by 22” ergonomic seat can be converted to a  full-flat bed (180°) with mattress, duvet, pillows, and ottoman. Loungewear and slippers for men and women are prepared to help feel at home. Each room has a hidden table for you to do your work. To fully drift away into slumber and noise-cancelling headphones are given to each passenger.

Business class

The business class interior is filled with a 43″ by 21.2″ seat that reclines into flat bed. There are armrests and personal storage for each seat. Regarding your laptop or mobile device, no need to worry because each seat has a USB and power outlet.

Whether you fly in first class, business class or economy class, comfort will always be with you. Reclining seats await each passenger in the economy, a footrest for more space and USB and power outlet to keep you busy or charge your gear in flight.

Food and Beverage

Garuda offers a wide selection of food from different countries.

In first class passengers can select any Indonesian or International cuisines, freshly prepared by chefs on board.

While in the business class, each passenger can choose either Indonesian, Japanese or a modern European inspired meal.

Lastly for the economy class, indonesian, western and asian servings are distributed according to passengers likings.

World-class wines and teas are also offered to quench each passengers thirst. Kids on board can enjoy hot chocolate, sodas, and cappuccino, actually even adults. Tasty snacks are also served.

First class:

  • Personal in-flight entertainment with a 23.5-inch LCD touch screen, equipped with remote control and noise-cancelling headphones.
  • A wide range of complimentary in-flight music, movies, games, newspapers, magazines and internet connectivity.

Business class:

  • eX2 Panasonic inflight entertainment system uses a 15″ LCD touchscreen.

Economy class;

  • eX2 Panasonic entertainment system uses a 9″ LCD touchscreen
